Carlton is full of people who left a dog behind, at their parents' place, in another state or in another country. If that's you, the sight of a golden retriever bounding across Princes Park can hit harder than you'd expect. Whether you've brought your dog with you or you just miss one, here are the off-leash dog parks in Carlton and how to find the local dog community.
Where are the off-leash dog parks in Carlton?
Princes Park in Carlton North has off-leash areas at any time, Canning and Neill Street Reserve in Carlton is off-leash at set times (6pm to 8am from November to March), and Royal Park and Manningham Reserve in neighbouring Parkville have more off-leash space. Carlton Gardens is on-lead.

Princes Park is the local favourite. The City of Melbourne's dog-spotters' guide recommends the north side, off Bowen Crescent, as the better of its two off-leash areas. It has grass, shade, bins and a tap with a water bowl. Neither area is fenced, so it suits dogs with good recall.
Canning and Neill Street Reserve is a small timed park in the middle of Carlton. In summer (November to March) it's off-leash from 6pm to 8am, perfect for an evening run after uni or work.
Royal Park has two off-leash areas: the oval south of Macarthur Road, and Poplar Oval and McPherson Field in the north. Carlton Gardens isn't an off-leash area, so keep dogs on a lead there. Source: City of Melbourne.
The City of Melbourne rules
- Everywhere is on-lead unless it's a signed off-leash area.
- In off-leash areas, carry a lead of 3 metres or less and keep your dog in sight and under voice control.
- Put your dog on a lead within 5 metres of a shared path (any path shared by walkers and bike riders).
- Put your dog on a lead within 20 metres of play equipment, barbecue or picnic areas, organised sport or training, events, and any waterbody.
- Always carry a bag and pick up after your dog.

Missing your dog? You can still belong
You don't need a dog to be part of a dog community. Plenty of Pawshare Club members are between dogs, or living somewhere that won't allow one yet. They join walks, come to meetups and get to know local dogs who are always happy to see them. Some members call it being a godparent, or a godpawrent, to a neighbour's dog. If that's you, our guide on spending time with dogs without owning one is a good next read.

If you're in Carlton and you've been missing that wagging-tail welcome, come and see if it feels like the right fit.
